Operation Baby Rescue: What Are The Dangers Of Drunk Driving?

On the night of February 10, the emergency departments of Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, Grady Health Systems and the Scottish Rite received the victims of a drunk driving crash. The doctors did their best to save everyone, but in the end, at least one person died. Now the survivors lay in hospital beds, fighting for their lives, and at least one of these victims is a one-year old girl.

Operation Baby Rescue

The sounds of the crash stirred an entire neighborhood along McKendree Church Road that Wednesday night. Neighbors left their homes to find debris and two wrecked cars sitting in the road, and so they immediately went into action. They called authorities and checked on the occupants of the vehicles, and that’s when they found the baby, injured and hanging upside down in her car seat.

The Good Samaritans quickly shattered one of the windows, opened one of the car doors, and cut the car seat free to get the baby out. The child was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but her father wasn’t as lucky. He was unresponsive when paramedics arrived at the scene.

What Are The Dangers Of Drunk Driving?

The police would later tell the press that a northbound Honda Accord carrying two people was speeding when it lost control and crossed into the southbound lane of McKendree Church Road. The Accord then collided head-on with a Toyota Camry that was carrying a family of three. After rescuing the victims, and examining the crime scene, the police also revealed that it appeared that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving says that around 290,000 people were injured by drunk driving incidents in 2013, and 10,076 people died in those crashes. Of those people who died, 1,149 were children aged 14 years or younger, and a little one-year old girl just barely escaped the same fate. Her father wasn’t so lucky.
