According to a recent study, Georgia is the 44th worst state for drivers in the U.S. The rankings were based on commute times, spending on gas, insurance premiums, vehicle repair costs, frequency of fatal crashes, and car thefts. The only states worse than Georgia for drivers were Louisiana, Texas, California, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and California.

The stats that make Georgia among the worst states for drivers:

  1. Commute time. Georgia is the seventh worst in the nation with an average commute time (each way) of 26.3 minutes.
  2. Annual gas spending. Georgia drivers, on average, spend $964 a year on gas. Wyoming drivers spend the most on gas: $1,614, while Florida is the cheapest for gas at only $563 a year.
  3. Insurance premium. The annual premium average is $920, giving Georgia the 16th highest insurance premium in the country.
  4. Vehicle repairs. The cost per job was an average of $431. Georgians pay slightly more than the national average of $390.
  5. Fatal crashes. Georgia is on par with the national average of 1.1 fatal crashes per 100 million miles driven. Montana tops the list with 2.0 fatal crashes per 100 million miles driven. Massachusetts has the lowest rate with 0.6.
  6. Car thefts. Georgia ranked seventh worst in car thefts with 268.5 per 100,000 people. California had the most with 431.2 thefts per 100,000 people.
