Ride-sharing apps such as Uber and Lyft have transformed our
society, replacing cabs
and public transportation in some places. In Georgia, both services are available throughout the state, depending on the location. One of the benefits provided by ride-sharing apps is that would-be drunk drivers now have additional options for getting home without putting other people at risk.
A recent study conducted by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) claimed 78 percent of people would rather use ride-sharing services than drink and drive. Some places are seeing huge drops in drunk driving accidents. In Virginia, fatal drunk driving accidents have decreased by 56 percent over the last two years. Seattle saw a 10 decrease in DUI arrests since Uber arrived.
Georgia could perhaps see the same benefits. For cities such as Atlanta, Lake City, Athens and many others, ride-sharing is now a possibility, and time will tell how effective these services are for reducing drunk driving accidents in our state.
Are Ride-Sharing Apps Available in Macon?
Unfortunately, Macon residents are still without ride-sharing services. But fear not, because there are other options to get home safely in our town.
Until Uber or Lyft arrive in Macon, taxi services and public transportation are still possibilities for getting home safely. Yellow Cab of Macon, American United Taxi Service, and Radio Cab all operate in our town. Some of these taxi services are open 24/7. In addition, our town also has public transportation. Macon Transit Authority operates buses up until 10 P.M.
There are so many alternatives for Georgia and Macon residents to get home safely, that there no good excuses for drinking and driving. Drunk driving accidents ruin lives, both for those responsible and those who are affected. It’s just not worth it.
