Have you ever gone to Best Buy and found just the right product at just the right value? Well, you might want to reconsider that deal. You might not know what you’re getting, and Best Buy might not know either.
Are Defective Products Best Buy’s Specialty?
From September 2010 to October 2015, Best Buy sold 600 recalled items to the customers who went to their stores. These recalled items were often Canon cameras, but Gree Dehumidifiers, LG washers and dryers, and Toshiba computers were also among the list of defective items they sold after being recalled.
These items were recalled for various reasons-from skin irritation to fire hazards. However, Best Buy continued to sell them in their stores as if these products were safe. So why did Best Buy continue to sell products that were marked as defective? It forgot them.
The Consumer Product Safety Commisssion (CPSC) investigated Best Buy and found defective products on the shelves in several stores. When asked about this discovery, the electronics store chain told officials that its workers simply missed the items. However, it’s a federal crime to sell items that have been recalled. To settle this charge, Best Buy will pay a $3.8 million fine, and the company will be required to reform its store procedures to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
The safety of consumers should be a paramount concern to any store operating in our country, but Best Buy didn’t hold up to that standard. This negligence could have resulted in the loss of homes, injuries, or even wrongful death, but so far, no one has come forward with such a report.
